NEWS FLASH ! For decades, doctors who run cancer clinics have warned patients to discontinue animal protein because it promoted cancer growth. Now these clinical observations have been scientifically confirmed and quantified in a new book called THE CHINA STUDY by T.Colin Campbell, PhD. with Thomas M. Campbell II. First BenBella Books Edition, January 2005. See especially chapter 3, "Turning Off Cancer".

The new evidence ranges from the world's largest nutritional study, conducted in China, to tightly controlled laboratory experiments. Repeatedly investigators were able to turn cancer on and off by adding or removing dietary animal protein!

Vegetable protein did not have a comparable effect.

INTRODUCTION

Many of the non-invasive cancer treatments will inhibit metastasis. This step in the PATIENTS' PROTOCOL emphasizes the simplest things that patients had in their own power to do right away, while making the rounds talking to doctors to get second opinions. In a tiny percentage of cases, these changes seemed to be enough to enable the body to finish off the cancer. But don't count on it. This may explain what conventional medicine used to call "spontaneous remission."

This step might also be advisable prior to any invasive medical procedures, such as biopsies, that could spread cancer cells into the blood circulation. Or to defend yourself afterward, if you weren't warned of the risks ahead of time.

Patients' initial steps to suppress metastasis usually fell into two categories:

1. Cancer-promoting activities to stop

2. Cancer-inhibiting activities to start.

SOME OF THE WORST

CANCER PROMOTING ACTIVITIES

A. UNNECESSARY BIOPSIES and other invasive medical procedures head our list. Medical professionals may disagree, but from some patients' point of view, it seemed that many 5 - 20 year old cancers started to grow rapidly and to spread after doctors started poking around. So we insisted on using less-invasive procedures like blood tests, imaging and thorough physical examination instead, whenever possible.

It is may be that invasive procedures disrupt a defensive perimeter the body installs to try to keep the cancer in check. That could explain why it usually takes 5 - 20 years before they grow large enough to be detected. For a more complete discussion of this common problem with biopsies, including medical research journals that seem to agree with us, and safer tests to use, please see the STEP 2, HEALTH WORK-UP AND TESTING discussion about biopsies. (You should be able to click here to go there, and then use the return icon to get back.)

If you have already had a biopsy, it might be prudent to get on a good diet and immune building program ASAP.

B. TOBACCO PRODUCTS. Cigarette smoking causes over 30% of cancer deaths in America, according to government statistics. The cancer promoting effects of all tobacco products are well studied scientifically and well known publicly, so they won't be covered again here. Nor will we discuss the additional deaths due to heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis, etc, attributed to tobacco.

However there is still some misconception that tobacco only affects certain target organs like the lungs. In fact, tobacco has been positively associated with some 17 types of cancer. Whenever the body is resisting cancer anywhere in the body, that can draw down and weaken immune defenses everywhere in the body. This could allow other cancers, which may have been kept in check, to start to grow and spread.

Even worse, new research indicates that nicotine promotes the growth of new blood vessels to feed tumors. Previously some cancer patients used to stop smoking or chewing tobacco by switching to a nicotine gum. This new research seems to say the best option for cancer patients is to stop cold turkey. The good news is that it can be much, much easier than your previous attempts, once you implement the super nutrition of PATIENTS' PROTOCOL STEP 4. The high level of nutrients, like B-Complex and Vitamin C, make it relatively easier to kick even hard drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Don't overlook second-hand smoke, which kills thousands of non-smokers every year. One study cited by the government's NCI web site found second hand smoke to be 20 times more dangerous than asbestos in buildings.

 C. ANIMAL PRODUCTS. The National Cancer Institute says that up to 60% of cancers may be diet related. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says eating an animal-based diet may cause 45% of those cancer deaths in America. They cite a convincing array of national and international studies showing that people who eat red meat, pork, poultry, dairy and eggs get much more cancer than people who eat a completely vegetarian, or vegan, diet.

Cooked animal products contain many of the same types of lethal carcinogens found in burning cigarettes, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) and heterocyclic amines (HCA's). If you can smell meat cooking, you are probably close enough to receive these carcinogens, just like second-hand tobacco smoke.

Animals are high in the food chain, so they accumulate toxins all their lives. Poultry, eggs, red and white meat, seafood and dairy are our worst dietary sources for carcinogens, hormones, pesticides, PCB's, tumor growth factors, antibiotics, "super bugs," and heavy metals. Animal products account for up to 95% of human dioxin exposure, which is responsible for up to 12% of cancers. (Robbins, FOOD REV. 2001, pg 42, 404) Toxic accumulation is compounded by the common commercial practice of feeding food animals sewer sludge, sick animal remains and feces.

The foreign proteins of animal food reportedly trigger an immune reaction in humans that surrounds the gut with millions of immune cells every time they are eaten. This may lead to gradual exhaustion of immunity and may be the reason that animal eaters are reported to have only half the natural killer cell activity as vegans.

Reports on the extensive Framingham study, which has recorded statistics on the town's population over 20 years, quote Director William Castelli, M.D. as finding that animal eaters get about 250% more cancer and die about 6 years earlier.

For decades the animal industry has spread the false ideas that animal protein is superior to vegetarian protein, and that vegetarian protein had to be combined in special ways to make it as good. While animal proteins (along with fat and calories) are more concentrated, independent modern research finds vegetarian protein to be safer and healthier.

All our lives we have been brainwashed by the meat industry, just like we were sold Marlborough cigarettes by Marlborough men (who later died from cancer and emphysema). Now here's a sample of the independent research on the other side of the issue.

Remember that we are patients, not scientists, so look to other sources for the scientific information. The Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine has a web site that explains the cancer risk of animal foods at www.pcrm.org.

Two books cited in the reference pages also have excellent bibliographies on this: Mad Cowboy and The Food Revolution.

One temporary solution some patients have used is to immediately replace all animal products across the board with a vegetarian equivalent. For example, virtually all animal products have versions made of vegetable, grains or legumes, including soy.

But soy may have its own problems, including pro-cancer estrogenic activity in certain situations. Soy-sponsored research claims soy also has anti-cancer activity. The research is conflicting, but it seems soy is much safer than meat.

The type of soy we get in America was modified from the soy of ancient Asia, to produce more industrial oils. Not all Westerners convert to modern soy easily, especially if they are already in a sick and weakened condition, with impaired digestion enzymes. Some doctors warn against heavy use of soy for other reasons, which will be discussed under STEP 4, NUTRITION.

In the long run, the most effective anti-cancer diets we have seen and used over the last 20 years have been based on vegetables and fruits with some whole grains and non-soy legumes, while excluding all animal products and carefully limiting or eliminating soy.

One of the first questions we hear is, "How will I get enough protein?" We think the question could better be, "I may have promoted cancer growth by eating 2-3 times more protein than a body can handle safely. How can I cut back to a healthy amount?"

The answer is that all vegetables contain protein. If you eat enough calories on a balanced diet, you can get enough protein. A balanced 2000-calorie vegan diet typically contains about 55 grams of protein, which just happens to match the government recommended amount. Maybe that's another indication that this is the ideal human diet we are designed to eat.

D. CHEMICAL PRODUCTS. Dioxin, perhaps the worst contaminant of the chemical industry, has been credited with causing 12% of the cancers in industrial societies, according to a study in Environmental Health Perspectives (106 Supp 2, 1998). Most of our exposure comes from industrial contamination of our food supply - especially dairy, meat and fish products.

There are other carcinogens in certain cosmetics and especially most dark hair dyes, except for certified organic henna. There are dangerous hormonal risks from pthalates found in virtually all soft plastic products, including food wrap and flexible plastic ware. Hormone medications, including The Pill may help to explain the breast cancer epidemic. The Biotek industry has produced so many carcinogens that are under the sink, in the garage and on the lawn that it could seem overwhelming.

But there is much that can be done to defend yourself. It seems like a big job at first, but once you have learned what to do, it can last a lifetime. There are several good books on safe consumer shopping. Select a book that offers authoritative and practical advice about which are the most serious threats and which are the best alternatives to replace them. We keep one in the car to take into the store. (With name and phone number on it, in case it's left in the shopping cart!)

One book many of us have used to make our own homes safer is:

"THE SAFE SHOPPER'S BIBLE" by Davis Steinman and Samuel S. Epstein, MD. 1995, Simon & Schuster Macmillan Company, NY, NY

(No, we don't sell it, or anything else.)

Then the next step is to get a box, fill it with all the carcinogens you found in your home, and take them to a toxic waste site. It's cheap cancer protection for everyone in the household, including pets.

E. FAT, FRIED FOODS AND OILS. Arachidonic acid is a fatty acid notorious for promoting not only cancer, but also the pain and inflammation that can go with it. The main source of it in most American diets is animal products. That's why many types of pain, including arthritis, will often diminish or even disappear when a patient goes on a vegan diet.

Arachidonic acid can also be made in our bodies from most vegetable oils, also known as Omega 6 oils. Yes, the Omega 6 family of oils is considered essential to human health. But the small amount we need, apparently 10 - 20 grams a day - can easily be obtained from the grains, seeds and vegetables in a vegan diet. Eating fried foods or using Omega 6 oils in salad dressing can be way too much. Even olive oil, which is high in safer monosaturated oils, still contains significant amounts of Omega 6 oils.

For salad dressings, use fruit or vegetable juices as a base, and add more finely chopped fruits or vegetables to tailor the flavor. Oil your car, not your food.

Fried foods, fats and oils promote cancer several ways. They provide cancer cells with more calories to grow on. The oil oxidizes easily, creating carcinogenic lipid peroxides, and free radicals. Besides the damage they cause, this uses up our defending anti-oxidants. And vegetable oil suppresses immunity so strongly that doctors use it to prevent transplanted organ rejection by a patient's immune system.

Omega 6 oil gets converted in our bodies into arachidonic acid and then arachidonic acid is made into the so-called bad prostaglandins or eicosanoids. These are the ones associated with cancer promotion, inflammation and pain.

Olive oil, which contains some Omega 6 oil, may not be harmful in small amounts. It will be covered in Step 4, on nutrition and diet.

Omega 3 oils, on the other hand, seem to be especially valuable even for cancer patients. In fact, Omega 3 oils have been used successfully to inhibit metastasis in breast cancer trials.   There is a controversy over limiting Omega 3 oils in the case of prostate cancer however, resulting from several conflicting studies. The source of Omega 3 oil may be critical to some cancers. While women's cancers are reported to do better on flaxseed or flax oil, these are controversial for prostate cancer. EPA/DHA capsules, which can be made from algae or molecularly distilled fish oil, seem to be the most recommended. See your health professional for the latest recommendation. All oils should be accompanied with Vitamin E to prevent internal oxidation. More details will be covered under Step 4, on nutrition and diet.

F. STRESS. Technically, stress is not caused by stressful events so much as by the stressful way we decide to react to the events. The stress of reading may be slight, but reading a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people can cause us to react with terror and stage fright. It's the reaction that summons our adrenaline (cortisol). This in turn automatically shuts down our immune system in order to switch energy to get ready for "fight or flight."

The body tries to be economical by borrowing energy from immunity and other long range uses for such immediate needs. Even such commendable activities as jogging or mental work can steal energy from the immune system. Doctors recommend continuing physical activity when possible, but reducing it to 50% of your usual capacity, to insure there is enough energy left for the fighting cancer.

Mental activity is more difficult to cut back. Alcohol or drugs can make things worse. Most of us used some kind of prayer, rest, or meditation that disengages the mind for 15 - 30 minutes, 2 - 3 times a day. Music and visualization can also help.

Stress management will be covered in more detail under PATIENTS' PROTOCOL, STEP 5, Improving Lifestyles. But don't wait. Give yourself permission to become more laid-back right now. And start looking into meditation or prayer.

G. ALCOHOL. The cancer risks of alcohol are many and pervasive, beginning with 1 drink a day, which some studies say can increase the risk of breast cancer up to 30%, to 6 or more drinks a day, which can increase the risk of all cancers combined by 60%. (Source: National Cancer Institute)

Cancers most directly associated with alcohol include oral, esophageal, laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers. The effect seems to be multiplied by smoking. Other associated cancers include colorectal and endometrial, lung, stomach and malignant melanoma.

If someone already has cancer, the alcohol threat could be much worse, because it also interferes with the liver's ability to detoxify carcinogens. Alcohol can promote hormone-related cancers by inhibiting several Phase II liver functions, including glucuronidation, methylation and sulfation, all needed to detoxify hormones.

Alcohol suppresses the immune system, possibly because it is a solvent which efficiently removes essential nutrients, including magnesium and zinc, and it uses up critical vitamins including C and B complex.

Do not be fooled by sponsored research reports that purport to show benefits to drinking. All studies we have examined used research tricks to manipulate the findings for "infomercial" purposes - just a clever way to advertise.

It is true that certain numbers go up and down on blood tests, and that homeless alcoholics have blood vessels as clean as a whistle. But you have to drink as much as they drink to get their results. Some studies claim that "moderate drinking" is not harmful. So the TV reader/newsperson is given a script that says the results mean that 1 or 2 drinks a day are OK. What the study really showed was that moderate drinking at 1 or 2 drinks a week was not harmful. That does seem to be a safe definition of moderate drinking.

Other studies have claimed that drinkers lived longer or had less heart disease when compared to non-drinkers. That was true only in those studies, because the non-drinkers they selected for comparison included former alcoholics dying from cirrhosis of the liver, forbidden to touch alcohol. They died early of liver failure, before they were old enough to develop heart disease. So look out for phony alcohol "research."

H. SUGAR/JUNK FOODS. You probably knew this category was coming - junk foods are guilty of promoting so many killer diseases that they should have a burial tax on them.

Sugars and other fast release carbohydrates can go into our blood so rapidly that they act more like drugs than food. They are called high-glycemic because they raise blood sugar (glucose) so rapidly. When our blood sugar soars, the body has to store it off quickly - as body fat - to avoid sugar shock. Meanwhile it promotes dangerous inflammation and the cancer gets even more calories to grow on. Now there is growing evidence that excess sugar itself promotes genetic damage that can turn healthy cells into cancer cells.

Cooking and processing can change raw, low-glycemic foods into high-glycemic foods. For instance, whole grains you can actually see and count have a lower glycemic index number than when they are ground into flour. A raw yam is a low-glycemic food, but a cooked yam becomes a high-glycemic food. PROTOCOL STEP 4, NUTRITION will cover this in more detail. Meanwhile, one can switch now to the convenience foods of raw fruits and vegetables. Just wash and eat. No pots and pans to scrub.

I. SALT. Salt has such a special role to play in promoting cancer that we cover it separately from junk food. Research from the times of Dr. Max Gerson up to modern science at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has confirmed that the sodium in salt can cause cancer cells to proliferate. And that potassium, found in all fresh fruits and vegetables, can turn cancer cells off. America's NASA obtained the patent on this "switch", but ironically, American cancer doctors seem to be the ones who ignore this discovery the most.

Meantime it is easy to replace the salt shaker with herbs and spices, and increase potassium with fresh produce of all kinds. The horrible amounts of sodium in many processed foods, especially soups, and the addictive nature of salty snacks must relegate them to the "dust bins of history."

According to researchers at the famous M.D. Andersen cancer hospital in Texas and many other scientists, our body should receive 5-10 times more potassium than sodium. Many cancer patients ate the opposite ratio, 5 - 10 times more sodium than potassium. No wonder cancer cells proliferate in their bodies.

J. RADIATION. Many kinds of radiation may promote cancer in various ways, including solar radiation, electromagnetic field radiation (EMF), and ionizing or X-ray type radiation. Solar radiation exposure is relatively easy to control for those who live and work indoors. Non-solar radiation may cause less that 3% of cancers, according to government estimates. But we will provide some details, because it is difficult to find the information.

Solar Radiation, Experts say people need some sunshine regularly to make vitamin D and strong bones. The vitamin D is made from cholesterol, so another benefit of sunshine is a reduction of blood cholesterol as much as 10 - 20%. It also helps to generate the anti-cancer hormone melatonin for good sleep.

On average, experts recommend about 20 minutes of sun a day, but the actual amount needed depends upon distance from the equator, color of the skin, and time of day. UV rays are considered to be safe when your shadow is at least as long as your actual height.

Overhead sunshine can contain a high level of UV-A and UV-B rays, which are believed to cause certain types of skin cancer. Sunscreen products are very iffy, and some studies show that people who use them actually get more skin cancer, not less. Why this is so isn't clear, but speculation suggests they may stay in the sun longer because sunscreen does prevent sunburn, our natural warning signal for too much sun. Or maybe it's because sunscreen SPF factors apply mainly to UV-B and not UV-A. Also some researchers believe the chemicals used in sunscreen have estrogenic properties and may promote cancer. Three chemicals are believed to be safe: zinc oxide, titanium oxide, and the B vitamin called PABA.

The best solutions may include selecting the right time of day to be out in the sun, and wearing broad brim hats and protective clothing during peak periods. Meanwhile it might be safer to think of sunscreens as only sunburn protection, not cancer protection.

Non-Solar Radiation. Some studies have suggested that we get more skin cancer from the UV rays of florescent lights than from sunshine, because we spend more time under them.

The dangers of microwave ovens and medical X-rays have been known for a long time, but sometimes we forget mammograms are X-rays, too. AMAS blood tests may prove far safer and far more accurate. See Patients' Protocol web page, Step 2, about testing for complete details.

The dangers of other forms of radiation, including electromagnetic fields from electrical appliances, florescent light fixtures, and electric power lines are often overlooked.  The patient's environment at work and at home may be a factor in promoting cancer or in depressing the immune system. But don't let our industrial age make you crazy. Keep this in perspective - exposure usually has to be frequent and/or of long duration to have much effect.

Meanwhile, remember the safe distance from computers and monitors for prolonged use is around 20 inches. Hardly any laptops qualify because EMF's are too high for the user to be in direct contact with the keyboard. Certain models of Sony VAIO laptops using the Centrino technology may qualify as safe or safer. But even they have hot spots to avoid.

WORKPLACE EXPOSURES are generally well documented and can help to determine what tests would be appropriate for each patient. Information can be obtained from the library or from the federal government.

RADON gas is a possible threat from drinking water and the land. Home test kits are available at many hardware stores.

EMF (ElectroMagnetic Field) pollution is another problem, both at home and at work. EMFs usually do not seem to be a major factor in causing cancer, except possibly childhood leukemia or skin cancer. However they can depress the immune system. Since problems can often be avoided easily with a little know-how, we will pass along guidelines some of us used. Remember, we are patients, not engineers, so use this information with caution.

In the past scientists used to dismiss what they called "background radiation" that pulsates from the sun. Today there is growing appreciation that this may be the metronome or clock that controls the beat of every living cell on earth. Unfortunately ordinary alternating house current is close enough to this frequency that it may interfere with the ways our cells work.

Again, we must keep this in perspective. The good EMF's from the sun penetrate buildings and can constantly correct the rhythms of our cells. The bad EMF's from man-made ac electricity dissipate with the square of the distance, meaning that they fall off rapidly just by getting further away from the source. Safe distances typically range from around 2 feet from blenders to 8 feet for some refrigerators.

Also the duration of exposure is an important factor. For example, hair dryers or power can-openers typically put out amazingly high EMF fields, but if the exposure is brief, it can be insignificant.

Practically speaking, EMFs may not be a major consideration unless the patient is feeble or the immune system is unresponsive or the cancer is gaining. The most common threat to cancer patients, if any, might be immune suppression from staying too close to electrical appliances. So the simple solution is not to do that.

However if there is both close and prolonged exposure, EMFs appear to cause serious problems.

Although electrical utility companies are understandably loath to admit to any adverse biological effects, they will usually tell you what distances are considered safe from major appliances, power lines and transformers. Sometimes the utility company will come out and measure the home exposure if asked.

Information is also available from the government EPA (Publication DOE/EE-0040) and various consumer books. While not specific for an individual case, their guidelines may indicate when testing is warranted.

The yellow pages may have testing services listed under Environmental Testing. If you are an engineering type, the cost of a good meter may be in the same ballpark as the service. But you must know what you are doing to get correct answers.

Don't settle for verbal assurances that test levels are "safe." The level of long-term EMF exposure currently considered safe by consumer protection groups is under 2 - 2.5 milligauss, so look for the actual test numbers.

Meanwhile, here are some rough rules of thumb for power lines. If the patient is closer than the estimated safe distances in the table below, it may be more reason to consider testing.

High Voltage Lines

1000 feet

Large-gauge, 3-phase primary wires

130 feet

Six or more small primaries

130 feet

Three to five small primaries

65 feet

First span secondaries, if they have service drops to more than two families

50 feet

Microwave or radio transmitters

Half a mile

Airport radar

Out of line of sight

K. TIGHT CLOTHES. Long ago Swedish studies implicated jockey-type shorts and tight jeans in several health problems for men. Now a landmark study involving thousands of women has found a very strong correlation with tight bras worn for a prolonged period, and breast cancer. Apparently tight clothes can block circulation of the lymph system. This is the circulatory system for the immune cells, but has no heart to pump it. It relies on the free flow of fluids through out the body. Even sitting too long in one position can obstruct this critical immune system function, another reason light exercise is so important.

L. SPECIAL RISK FACTORS. Some types of cancer have special risk factors found to cause or promote them in particular. Contact the government's National Cancer Institute website to find the risk factors associated with the cancer of interest. (You should be able to click here for www.NCI.NIH.gov to go to that site on the Internet, and use the return icon to get back to this spot. But just in case, you might want to bookmark where you are now.)

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Note that the really big threats of cancer come from just a handful of industries, including tobacco products, animal products and chemical products. The causes of our cancer epidemic are no mystery. It would not be very difficult to prevent the vast majority of cancers with today's technology.

But we can't do anything to control these industries because they are large political campaign contributors. The government can't control these industries because they control the government.

One outrageous example was when the Democratic Administration of Clinton and Gore, joined with the Republican Congress of Gingrich and Lott, to LEGALIZE the use of carcinogens in our food! Yes, to LEGALIZE carcinogens in our food! Democrats and Republicans working together succeeded in repealing the "Delaney Amendment" which had made carcinogens illegal until then.

The only cure for cancer in America is campaign finance reform. But contribution limits have never worked for long. Sooner or later they figure a way around them. Instead, the only real reform that works must include enough public funding and enough free radio and television time that honest Americans can afford to run and win. It's that simple.

Right now, all but the wealthiest politicians have to be on the payroll of big industry and special interests. Raising money by selling out is the only road we have given our political leaders.

If you want America to stop giving you so much cancer, if you want America to have real democracy, please contact Common Cause, who has an affordable plan to free our elections. And tell your political representatives that it is important to you. They don't think you care, so they ignore it.

With the government spending billions of dollars of our money to support and protect the cancer-causing companies, campaign finance reform will be cheap at any cost.
